La Mesa's growth in the 1920s can be seen in the development of the commercial zone along the south side of Lookout Avenue (renamed La Mesa Boulevard in 1940). La Mesans visiting downtown could conveniently pay their SDG&E bill, shop at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store, or eat at the Drug Store café.

History plaques are a community service partnership between Rotary Club of La Mesa and La Mesa Historical Society.
