  "detail": "A pioneering two-story commercial building was built on this site in 1908. It housed Peter Vessels grocery, later a furniture store, pool hall/tobacco shop and meat market. After a November 1919 fire destroyed the adjacent buildings, this structure was expanded into its current two-lot configuration in 1921. The Hotel La Mesa occupied the second floor from 1923 to 1975."
